Party Time

There used to be quilting parties where women got together and worked on quilts as a community effort. Then there were bridge or whist parties during the 1950's and 1960's when there were a few women home during the day. Bingo was kind of big around the Boston area for awhile, my grandmother and her sisters loved to meet up and play their gizillion cards. Every once and awhile, I would drive my grandmother to Bingo, however the cigarette smoke was gross. I'm not too sure what was going on in the 80's and 90's, I was too busy raising my babies and working evenings. But last year I started hearing about Bunco and went to a party with couples. You mention Bunco and somebody knows somebody who goes to monthly parties. It's time for me to join the party band wagon and have some social face to face time versus playing with my blog template on my lap top, while my husband watches some old movie.

It's been a very long winter and I thought it would be fun to have a group of women over to play. Eleven of them have not played, so it's going to be interesting. But you do know what that means?????? Now I have to clean my house, my kids are off from school today for conferences and this is my food shopping day. Basically, I am going to be exhausted by the time my friends get here. Nevertheless, it will be a good time with good food and drink.

Is Bunco big where you live? Have you played it? Any good theme ideas? What other party games are out there?

  1. I have heard of the 'Bunco' phenomenom but I have never played - from what I've heard the ladies have a blast.

Our youth worker's mom plays it monthly and she said they just get Craaaaaazy - when it's time to switch tables they play the 'baby elephant song'!

I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun! Most of the people I know either get together for cards still - good ol; standard or game nights. We do game nights as staff and we usually play Balderdash and our pastor has a hoot.

Jen, good post. I have instructions for a game my husband and I like to play (more fun when there are more players) called "Footsie,"and is kin to Canasta. I won't put the link on your blog, but it was my Jan3rd post. I've never played Bunco, so I'll have to check it out.
A fun party game for lots of people is Apples to Apples. It takes no real thought at all, and it's fun. Look it up (if you want it, I have an extra set of the game!).
Have a great time with your party. Remember that folks will forget over time if your house was dusty, but they will remember if they have a good time!

  3. We love Apples to Apples and played it at Christmas with the whole family from 13 - 77, it was a blast. Especially when my boys and unmarried brother and cousin where all on the same wavelength.

I will check out the footsie, I bet it's going to be like Big Bertha. Big Bertha is a progressive game like phase 10, maybe I will write about it sometime.

  4. I have heard of Bunco and Bunco parties as well, but I have never played. The "big" games people get together to play around here are either Sheepshead or Euchre. I don't play either of those either.

  5. I own the Bunco game, but have never played:-) I am hoping to find a group near us so I can give it a try! It sounds like a fun "mommies night out" game.

  6. I played Bunco many years ago with other Navy wives. I don't drive and I can't join the one that several members of my church belong to because I feel like it is an imposition to have them pick me up each time. It is lots of fun! ENJOY!

I was going to suggest Apples To Apples also but someone beat me to it. It is great! I have the delux edition. I first played it at the FIREHOUSE where my son works in Seattle at Christmas when he was on duty. I came home and bought myself the game. I took it on our church ladies retreat last year and it was a good experience too.

My favorite get together game is Racehorse Pinochle. When I was married and hubby was in Navy, we had some all night pinochle games with another couple. We played, ate dinner, played more before one couple left to go home and shower, get new clothes on and have us over to their home for more of the same on Saturday night. Those were some wonderful marathons of pinochle for me.

Many years later as a single Mom, I taught my three kids how to play when they were still in grade school. . . we played by showing each other our hands and who should bid and why. Before you knew it, we could play without revealing everything!

    OK, now repeat after me. . . I am a BUNCO addict. . .

BTW I have been writing on a different blog for cardmaking. . . you might catch me over there now a days. . . hope this works:

  10. I bought Scene it last Christmas and we haven't played it yet. My oldest has an incredible memory for the anything and he will kill us on it.

I also got the James Bond add on and my husband has watched every single one of them at least 20x, or at least it feels that way for me!
