#27, Thursday Thirteen, Sights, Sounds and Smells of Back to School

13 Sights, Sounds and Smell of Back to school
I love summer even now that I am not teaching, there is something to be said for hanging out versus go, go, going all the time!
  1. A Bag of football equipment has taken oven my back porch.
  2. The smell from above mentioned equipment will never be sold as a Yankee Candle Scent.
  3. The crickets are non stop chirping. Luckily they are staying outside this year and I know that my cats are cursing the new door on our back porch that now has a seal on the bottom.
  4. Laundry has increased with daily washes of cross country and football clothes. And I have trained my children well, they do their own laundry!!
  5. Let's see how many water bottles and empty gatorade bottles can fit on a 15 inch counter top.
  6. The ads and circulars filling the newspapers with back to school sales.
  7. The slowly growing pile of stuff gathering to be brought back to college.
  8. The school picture information is on the island and in the next few days they will slowly sink to the bottom of the pile.
  9. Pile, what pile? Why the pile of forms that the school has sent, two manila envelopes of the same stuff for two boys. Health forms, lunch information, bus routes, lunch lady birthdays, principal slush fund....still with me here?
  10. Backpacks are emerging from the closet to to have the junk from last year cleaned out.
  11. Here in New England, we have woken up to temps in the 40's, an early glimpse of October for us.
  12. Driving the youngest to track before work in the morning since his older brother has to be at the school at 6:30am for football, kind of eerie to come off the hill and drive into the early morning fog.
  13. The slow days of summer becoming frantic with all the school preparation and sports, the taste of what's to come.

  1. I can't wait until my boys and daughter get into high school. I love football and hope at least one of my boys play football and one play soccer.

I know one who is praticing up on his basketball already.

    Great list!
    Happy Thursday Thirteen!

  3. I had no idea there was so much STUFF that accompanies back to school! Sounds like your house is overwhelmed by STUFF! (Love the comment about Yankee Candles.)

  4. If I was wearing a hat, I would take it off to you. I know you are glad that you taught your kids how to do their own laundry.

  6. School started in my town on Monday of this week, so every morning I've heard the rattle of big school busses driving by my house headed to/from the local high school that is down the street.

  7. You've taught your boys how to do laundry? I rank that right up there with the three R's! Way to go, Jen.

The first days of school reminds me that fall is just around the corner.

Happy TT! Great list. *g* Yankee Candles.

  9. Sounds like fun! :) As a teacher, I can completely sympathize with all of that paperwork that arrives at the start of the school year!

I can;t even imagine what it would be like to wake up to temperatures in the 40's; yesterday the temperature was almost 100. I sometimes miss the change of the seasons, though.

The one scent that brings back to me memories of back to school in the sixties is that vinyl smell I associate with old-fashioned "book satchels." In my day, girls didn't carry backpacks. My satchel was always crammed with papers within a few weeks; I never cleaned it...

  13. Just the mere thought of trying to sort out the kids' activity schedules this year is sending me into heart palpitations, and mine are still little!

No 40 degree temps here though. Heck, we don't even get that in the winter.

  16. Isn't it hard to believe that 2 weeks ago it was 90 degrees and now I had to put a blanket on my bed? (Of course, I'm still sleeping with the window open. ;) )

    Happy TT!

  18. Sounds like you are one busy lady! This year, I am "busy" with moving but sicne I am doing it a little at a time, it is o so much better. I figure I will probably be finished by Christmas! BUT what I put in the new apartment is stuff I want, all sorted through, not like so many other rushed moves. I am also giving away to Goodwill any stuff my kids don't want. I am tired of carrying around their stuff until they have a permanent home. I thought oldest was retiring when he got back from Afghanistan but no, he decided to sign on with Navy for two more years so he is in Italy. Hope his brother has room in his garage as I am not keeping it any longer. I have no attic or garage. But, I digress.

  19. I have similar sights, sounds and smells. My DD is preening and it's getting crazy around here.

We've got outfit trials etc. galore. I'll be glad once she has adapted to the new high school experience.
