Tagged: Eight things about me

I think that I have been tagged before, but I was tagged by One Gal's Musings, no relation...Here are the rules:
The Rules: “Each person posts the rules before their list, then they list 8 things about themselves. At the end of the post, that person tags and links to other people and then visits those peoples’ sites and comments letting them know that they have been tagged, and to come read the post, so they know what they have to do.”

1. My hair is straight, not just kind of, I have the straightest hair of anyone I know. But given that, I did succumb to the early 80's perm craze. (Shelly-posted her permed hair and I thought it would be only fair of me to show that she was not alone) This photo was taken in 1982 when I graduated from UNH. All I can say about that hair style is that I had this compulsion to sing: "The Sun Comes out tomorrow"

2. I ski, but I lack confidence and am afraid to go really fast. These two friends pictured with me are phenomenal skiers and I think that both went to college in New Hampshire just to ski. The first few times that I went skiing with them, I would make up fake excuses to not ski with them, like having to go and fix some phantom piece of equipment or that I had to go to the bathroom. The difference in our skiing is that they go straight down the mountain, while I like to traverse the trails.

3. I have been going to Nova Scotia every summer for the past 36 years and have only missed going one summer. This is a picture of me with my brothers and Dad on the first ferry we took, The Prince of Fundy. It was such an adventure. ( Don't you just love the styles and my Marcia Brady hair?)
4. We missed going to Nova Scotia in 1999 when my brother Brian was dying of cancer ( the red head in the picture above). He was diagnosed in November of 1998 and treatment was stopped in early July 1999. I can't believe that it has been 8 years, seems like only yesterday. The whole experience of living through a terminal illness is life changing for the family. Brian had a great sense of humor and was a hard worker. He loved kids, family, games, and golf and we miss him constantly.

5. My mother took me to Children's Hospital when I was three because I didn't talk. The doctor said it was because everyone did everything for me. When I came home, a neighbor asked me where I had gone and I answered in a full sentence. I am not sure if that's a positive thing to say about my personality, but it's nice to know that my parents and Brian gave me what I wanted without me speaking. Of course I ended up speech delayed and stuttered, but it's nice to think that for a short time, I was a princess.

6. I love to read and there's always a pile of books by my bed. Right now I am reading Money Driven Medicine and if you have never clicked on a book link before, let this one be your first. This book is factual and Maggie Mahar backs up all of her information with extensive footnotes at the end of the book. It's amazing to see where the money has gone and where it is going now for medical care. The more I read it, the more I am convinced that insurance companies do not have our good health as their major goal, rather it's their stock holders.

7. I love playing spades and qwerty on Pogo.com as Janmcwb2. Before blogging, this is where I used to spend my time on the internet. If you would like to connect and play a game, send me a message over there.

8. This week I had a skin thingy removed from my upper right arm on the inside and the two stitches are annoying. The tape adhesive is causing most of the irritation and lucky me, to save money for a trip back to the doctor, either I am going to remove my stitches, my mother may when I go up to Nova Scotia next weekend or a nurse friend might do it next Friday. How hard can it be? I have removed stitches from my cats before when they (females) were fixed.

I am not going to make specific tags, but if you would like to do this, please comment back and I will check out your eight!

Thank you for not leaving me all alone out there with my permed hair! You are so funny. You blow my dress up. I've read about your brother, Brian, before. I'm so sorry that you lost him. I know that's something that we don't ever get over...that missing and longing.
As for skiing...if you go to the top of the mountain, you are doing better than I will. Can you say "bunny slopes."

I'm just not believing that you didn't talk. Are you trying to make up for it now (lol)?

This is a great post, Jen. I like getting to know more about you.

  3. I can't say I've had a bad perm - but one time I had my DH use those crazy curlers on my hair. I came out wanting to sing 'the sun will come out tomorrow' yes, my hair was dyed red at the time too. What was I thinking.

I have never played spades at Pogo but I play wordwhomp and tumblebees as teamouse69.

I may try this meme out later in the week if I find I'm at a loss for words. It's annoying when that happens...:)!

Thanks for sharing, especially the pics!

  4. The perm! Right after I had Luke, I decided to get a perm- you know, to make things easier' for me. Stupidest thing I ever did! I should have waited until all the hormones were back to normal!

Thanks for sharing the pics! I can't ski- too afraid I would break my leg(s)!

  5. I can't believe what I read! I didn't talk when I was little, either. When I finally did speak, it was a sentence. ("Dog is mine," in response to my sister poaching my stuffed animal.) It was poignant to see Brian's photo. Do you suppose that your life-changing experience with your brother has made you more compassionate at work?

  8. Hey - I'm in Nova Scotia this very minute! And I graduated high school in 1982, as well. I think that was the cool year to be a grad.

Sorry to hear about your brother. Of course eight years would seem to be surreal when you can probably still feel him around you and your family.
