Thursday Thirteen, #32 Brand Names

I am borrowing this Thursday Thirteen idea from Lori at Single Parents Unite who did this last week. Some of hers were different from mine. Bet there are companies out there thrilled for the free advertising. Here are 13 brand names that I buy, if you can convince me to give up my rigid stance on some of these, I would love to hear your thoughts.

1. Peanut Butter: Skippy, tried the store brands but we always come back to Skippy.

2. Butter: Land of Lakes

3. American Cheese: Has to be Land of lakes or I have to listen to a lot of whining.

4. Relish: Cains

5. Toilet Paper: Scott

6. Mayonnaise: Cains

7. Laundry Detergent: ALL based on the advice of my Dad who used to fix appliances, it has lower sudsing.

8. Dishwasher Detergent: Cascade

9. Jelly: Welchs, I think it has something to do with the glasses. Do I want my milk in the Simba glass or Pooh bear glass?

10. Toothpaste: Crest

12. Cat food: Iams (no hairball)

13. Ketchup: Heinz.....is there another?

Writing this list made me think that I am buying what I was brought up with.
Oh my, another, I am becoming my mother moment.

HA! Just reread my list on Thursday morning and I tried to scam out of 13, forgot # 11 as if this wasn't hard enough by the end of the list.
#11 Frozen Pizza- Digiorno pizza, when I just don't want to cook.

The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun! Be sure to update your Thirteen with links that are left for you, as well! I will link to everyone who participates and leaves a link to their 13 things. Trackbacks, pings, comment links accepted!

  1. Looks like a pretty good list -- many of the same things I choose. EXCEPT the condiments which I don't use at all.

  4. I'm with you on the cat food. For the rest it doesn't really matter, I like a lot of brand but I'm cheap. whatever's on sale!!!

  5. I use most of your list too. I loved the end about turning into your mother. Yes, we tend to keep using what we were raised on. Have a great TT. :)

  6. Are you a choosy mother? I ask because I always thought that they chose Jif. As for toothpaste, I have been an Aquafresh guy for a long time.

  7. Choosy, lol, my kids would call me cheap!

  8. My most passionate brand loyalty is to Viva paper towels. WHITE Viva paper towels. Regular size -- NOT that damn select-a-size. Really. This is important to me. I accept no substitutes.

PS Thanks for your earlier comment on the "towel post" on my blog. It made me smile.

  9. I'm so with you on this list. Especially on the PB and the Iams!

  10. With the exception of chocolate and shampoo/conditioner, I'm not very brand loyal. I think part of that is from moving around so much. Every city and region has its own brands and the whole brand thing starts to see really silly.

Happy TT and thanks for stopping by. Please don't be put off by the books I listed if they'd otherwise be something you might like to read. Try them first. :D

  12. I agree with you. Lots of items NEED to be name brand purchases. Great list.

    Happy TT :)

I wish you a nice TT

  15. I would have to say Jif instead of Skippy! A few of those brands I haven't heard of but I'm sure that's a regional thing (Cains)

I'll have to give this one a try someday.

  18. There are times when the non-name brands just won't do. I'll only purchase Best Foods mayonnaise. There is only one brand of soy milk I'll drink and I'm fussy about OJ too.

My mom moment came not too long ago. I let out with a laugh and it sounded just like her!

Hmmm, looks like participants 13, 14 & 15 did the same thing to you they did to me.

  19. I'm not very brand loyal - I just go with whatever's cheapest - but I agree with your choice of peanut butter, toothpaste, and laundry detergent. I always have to have these brands.

  20. I'm not normally too fussed about brand but Crest toothpaste vanished from all the shops round here and I can't find one I like since then.

    Interesting TT :-)

What a great idea for a TT. I love that you caught yourself skipping #11, sounds like something I would do. Happy TT.

  22. I grew up with Jif, but switched to Skippy Natural. Yum...

We are very brand-specific here, too. Our grocery store must hate us, though: they discontinue brand names left and right and seem determined to make us choose between second-rate store brands or shopping elsewhere.

Amazing how much they're hurting themselves...

  23. Intersting list. I don't think i use any of those. LOL

  24. This is always a fun list - I'll have to give it a try one of these days.

  25. Peter Pan over Skippy!

All the rest I can at least agree with, though I am partial to Hunts over Heinz

  26. I use No Name brand a lot (here in Canada, it's an actual brand, the store brand of Superstore.) It's always yummy or good quality, and definitely a third lower in price than name brands.

I only know brands 10, 12 and 13. In fact, I think I "Heinz" everything! Baked beans, canned spaghetti, ketchup...

Any thoughts or musings of your own to add?
